Here is a story that is sure to make your day. Lori Wood, an ICU nurse in Georgia, legally adopted a 27-year-old man she barely knew so that he could receive a life-saving heart transplant. Jonathan Pinkard, the 27-year-old with autism, was in desperate need of a heart transplant, but because he had no family and was in and out of homeless shelters, the doctors would not approve him for the procedure. For 4 months Jonathan was in and out of the hospital as his condition deteriorated, but everything changed when he met Lori.
Lori and Jonathan connected instantly over their shared loved of the game show Family feud. (Who doesn’t love family Feud?) After hearing Jonathan’s story and how he had no family she knew she had to do something to help him and boy did she. Lori offered to adopt Jonathan and care for him after his surgery and he, of course, accepted.
Jonathan underwent his procedure back in August and is doing much better. Lori, who he know lovingly calls “mama”, is helping him with his medications and also working with him so that he can get back on his feet and live an independent life.
When asked about her decision to adopt Jonathan, Lori had this to say: “At some point, God places people in situations in your life, and you have the choice to do something about it. “
