Fresh off of his first major win, a well played weekend of golf at Pebble Beach, Gary Woodland made a Facetime call in the press room to share the moment with a friend from whom he drew motivation.
Gary Woodland first met Amy Bockerstette back in January when the two shared another special moment. Amy Bockerstette, a Special Olympics golfer, played alongside Woodland on the 16th hole Par-3 ahead of the Waste Management Phoenix Open. Bockerstette, who has Down Syndrome, hit a chip shot onto the green, 8 foot away from the pin. Woodland said to Bockerstette, “Why don’t you go ahead and make that?” To which Bockerstette now famously replied, “Okay, I’ve got this.” And she did. She sunk the put clean into the hole to an eruption from the crowd.
Woodland said Bockerstette is an inspiration to him and other golfers, and after his big win on Sunday he wanted to share that moment with her.
